The Ones Who Came After
Light dragons are not ancient. That is the first thing the realms get wrong about them.
When the Solumbra were banished, they took Moral Magic out of the world entire, both halves at once, because both halves had lived in the same creature. What remained was a world with a hole in it exactly the shape of a thing it could no longer name.
Terros filled the hole the way worlds do. Slowly, without intention, over generations. Light dragons arose out of that absence: gold-scaled, luminous, carrying one half of something that had once been whole and no memory at all of the other.
They are not the Solumbra's survivors. They are the world's attempt to grow the missing piece back, and it only ever managed half.
Why They Hide
Light dragons understood their own position from the beginning.
Something had reached into the world and eaten the light out of an entire line. That thing had not gone anywhere. And here they were — new, few, and made almost entirely of the thing it had proven hungry for.
So they went to the Druids and they vanished, and they have stayed vanished for the whole of their existence. Not a retreat from a war they lost. A refusal to begin one they could not survive.
They have been waiting since the beginning for shadow to rise again. Light alone is not Moral Magic; it is half of it, and half of a balance is only an imbalance wearing better colours. Whole, the two of them protect souls from corruption. Apart, Light is simply one more thing that can be consumed.
Three light dragons live on Terros. Most of the line has never emerged at all.
Physical Characteristics
Light dragons display scales in shades of gold, from pale champagne to deep burnished amber, often catching light in ways that make them appear lit from within.
They are large, regal, and unmistakable, which is precisely their difficulty. A shadow dragon can thin to smoke and stand in a room unnoticed. A light dragon cannot hide in a landscape. It can only hide from one.
Temperament & Philosophy
Light dragons are charming, diplomatic, and deeply social, natural peacemakers who see every side of a conflict and move between opposing forces with tact.
They are truth-seekers, unable to abide deception, but wise enough to know truth must sometimes be delivered gently.
Their flaw is the shape of their gift. Seeing every perspective makes choosing one difficult. They avoid confrontation even where confrontation is required. They hope past the point where hope is useful.
Shadow is what corrects that, and Shadow is what they have never had.
The Balance of Moral Magic
Light and Shadow are not good against evil. They are two sides of every trait, and both are required for wholeness:
-
Confidence (Light) balanced with Humility (Shadow) creates healthy self-awareness
-
Compassion (Light) balanced with Boundaries (Shadow) enables sustainable relationships
-
Hope (Light) balanced with Realism (Shadow) produces practical optimism
-
Forgiveness (Light) balanced with Justice (Shadow) ensures fair accountability
-
Transparency (Light) balanced with Privacy (Shadow) allows appropriate disclosure
-
Idealism (Light) balanced with Pragmatism (Shadow) generates effective action
Too much Light without Shadow: naivety, vulnerability to manipulation, burnout from giving without limit. Too much Shadow without Light: cynicism, isolation, darkness without hope.
The Solumbra held both without effort. It is why removing them worked.
Combat & Abilities
-
Reveal truth — dispel lies, illusions, and deceptions
-
Heal wounds — restore physical and emotional damage
-
Purify corruption — cleanse darkness, though full restoration requires Shadow
-
Create protective barriers — shield allies behind walls of radiant light
-
Inspire — grant hope, courage, and clarity to those fighting alongside them
-
Illuminate — make the unseen visible
In battle a light dragon is devastating through control and support rather than destruction. It protects, exposes, heals, and creates the
opening someone else takes.
Its power was designed to work alongside something. For two thousand turns there has been nothing for it to work alongside.
Aurelia — The First to Emerge
Aurelia has spent her whole life in hiding with the Druids, as every light dragon has.
She is golden-scaled and regal, charming and diplomatic, a seeker of truth who weighs every side before she moves. She has never once been whole, and she has always known it.
Then shadow returned to the world.
She did not recognise Ender. They had never met; the Solumbra were gone before her line existed. What she felt was simpler and older than recognition — the other half of a balance, present in the world for the first time in her life.
She revealed herself to Elowen, who had trained with the Druids and earned access to what they guard. The bond that followed was not only a dragon choosing a rider. It was the first move toward a balance that has been broken since before either of them was born.
What Comes Next
Light dragons remain hidden. Most will not emerge until they are certain the world can survive their being in it.
When Aurelia and Ender meet, there will be no reunion. There is nothing to remember. There is only the fact of the other, and the strange arithmetic of two incomplete things standing in the same room — one that lost its other half, one that never had one.
Neither of them is the Solumbra. Together they are the closest thing Terros has left.
