What the Void Left Behind

Shadow dragons are not a species. They are a wound.

Before the Shattering, the line was called Solumbra, sun and shadow held in one body, light and dark as two faces of a single nature. They were not the balance between two forces. They were the balance, whole, in one creature. Moral Magic lived in them the way blood lives in a body.

Then they were banished, and the Void ate the light out of them.

What returned is what Terros now calls a shadow dragon: scales of polished obsidian, shadow without its other half, and no road back. This was not a curse. A curse can be lifted. Their light was consumed, and consumed things do not return.

The Line That "Disappeared"

Two thousand turns of records say the Solumbra vanished during the Shattering. Lost. One more casualty of a broken world.

Nobody writes banished. Nobody writes by whom.

The lie is older than the courts that repeat it, and it was necessary. Remove the Solumbra and you remove Moral Magic entirely, both halves in a single act, because both halves lived in the same creature. Without that guard, Soul Magic stood unprotected. Everything the Shattering became was possible only after the Solumbra were gone.

They were not collateral damage. They were the door that had to be opened first.

Draconix, Where They Still Fly

On their home world, the Solumbra endure. Whole. Both natures intact.

There are no shadow dragons on Draconix, and no light dragons either. There was never any reason to name the halves separately, because nothing had ever split them.

The door sealed two thousand turns ago, held shut by a dying Dragon King's life force. Every dragon on Terros is the last of something. Ender is the last of a species that is not extinct — it is simply on the other side of a door no one can open.

Physical Characteristics

Shadow dragons display scales of deep, polished obsidian, black enough to swallow light rather than reflect it. Where other bloodlines catch the sun, a shadow dragon consumes it.

They are among the largest dragons known, though size is a strange measure for a creature that can thin itself into smoke and pour through the gap under a door. A shadow dragon is only fully corporeal when it chooses to be. The rest of the time it is present the way a held breath is present, occupying space, exerting weight, visible only in what it displaces.

Temperament

Shadow dragons are decisive where others deliberate. They see the harsh shape of a situation and name it, without cushioning and without cruelty, because comfort was never their function. Where Light asks what should be hoped for, Shadow asks what is actually true.

They are fiercely, permanently loyal. A shadow dragon that has chosen a rider does not reconsider.

And they are grieving, whether or not they say so. Every one of them remembers being whole.

Ender

One shadow dragon lives on Terros, and he is the first ever to escape the Void.

He is called a void dragon. He answers to it. Two thousand turns in a place that was meant to hold him taught him to work it like a tool, and the name is accurate about where he has been and what he can do. It is not accurate about what he is.

He was young when they banished his kind. Too young for a rider. He watched the older dragons find their matches and wanted it with an uncomplicated hunger, and then the world closed and there was nothing to want it toward.

He crossed two thousand turns of nothing because he heard a child screaming for a boy who would not scream for himself.

The world believes the Solumbra vanished. Ender is one of them, standing in plain sight, and no one connects him to the line — because the part of him that would have made it obvious was eaten.
