The Story Terros Tells Its Children

Behave, or the Devourer will come for you.

Every child in two realms grows up on it. She waits out past the maps. She takes the ones who wander. The only thing that keeps her from the door is being good.

Two thousand turns of that. A whole world raising its children on her name.

She has been a scholar the entire time.

She Told Them What Was Coming

Before the world broke, she could already see it breaking.

So she went to the ones who could have stopped it and she said so, plainly, the way someone does when they are certain and running out of time. She was not asking them to believe a feeling. She had the work. She had the study behind it. She was right.

They did not want to hear it, and they had the power to make certain she never said it again.

Then it happened exactly as she had described.

What the Realms Believe

That the Glyphs are monsters, and she is the worst of them.

They are not wrong about the Glyphs. Something came out of that catastrophe hunting, and the things it made do not speak, do not stop, and do not remember what they were. Two realms have buried enough people to have earned their fear.

But fear needs a name more than it needs a species. So the story settled on her, and a warning became a bedtime threat, and two thousand turns later there is not a child in Terros who could tell you where the tale came from.

She has never once corrected anyone.

Two Thousand Turns of Watching

She keeps eternal time, and she has never once been able to spend it.

Everything that has happened sits in her, whole, in the order it happened. And it runs the other way as well. She sees the threads forward, all of them, every branch a choice would open and every one it would close. She has watched the same mistake made in a hundred variations by people who will never know she was in the room.

She cannot touch any of it. That is the shape of the sentence. Perfect sight, no hands.

She does not rage about it. She stopped a long time ago, and what is left is patience so complete it reads as stillness. She has a full range of feeling and almost never spends it, and when something does move in her face it is worth more than anyone else in the room saying it out loud.

The Seventh

She teaches. It is the one thing the sentence left her.

She cannot act, so she gives what she knows to the ones who can. She has done it six times. Six Umbrals, across two thousand turns, each one taught everything she had and each one sent out to try.

Six times she watched them fail.

Not one ever assembled the pieces. They were brave, most of them. Some were brilliant. None of them could see the shape of the thing they were standing inside, and the world stayed broken, and she went back to waiting.

The seventh arrived by accident.

He was twelve, he came through in a panic he could not control, and he landed on her floor bleeding and terrified and turns ahead of when she had meant to begin. She fed him. She gave him words. She made room for him to come back.

And she told him, that first sun, that he was not like the ones before him.

⚠ He wants to know things. Not to use them. To know them. He works at a problem the way water works at stone, and he sees what nobody thought to look at, and in two thousand turns of teaching she has never once had a student do that.

She has read every thread. She knows most of what this costs him.

It is the seventh attempt and there will not be an eighth. If it fails here, Terros stays broken. Arcadia stays poor in magic. Everything that was cursed stays cursed, and the suffering simply continues, and she watches that too.

She teaches him anyway.

Appearance

Obsidian, and light does not come back off her.

Violet runes move beneath the surface of her skin, slow, never twice in the same place. They are not decoration and they are not writing anyone living can read.

Her eyes are the thing people remember. Electric violet shot through with deep indigo, turning like something seen through a far glass. Nebulae. They hold light the way distance holds it.

She speaks in measured, archaic tones, with a faint echo that arrives inside the listener rather than in the room. There is a harmony under her voice, as though several people are saying the same thing at once and have had a very long time to practice.

When she is angry it goes sharp and crystalline. Like something breaking.
